Woe be the bicycle which spends its time parked outside (in all weathers) for years on end … the priority of this faithful steed is to get you ‘wherever and back’ year in, year out, not to stand out too much and yet that makes its precious in it’s own way. A decent lock is as important to protect the sum of it’s parts, as a good saddle and mudguards are to protect yours. Racks to attach a pannier full of food/computers/etc., can be included or added later, whilst making your ride more comfortable than carrying stuff on your back. Go for function before fashion and you’re onto a winner.
